Brahma Viharas
(metta, etc)
Five Remembrances
~I am of the nature to grow old. There is not way to escape growing old.
~I am of the nature to have ill health. There is no escaping having ill health.
~I am of the nature to die. There is no escaping death.
~All that is dear to me and everyone I love are of the nature to change. There is no escaping being separated from them.
~My actions are my only true belongings. I cannot escape the consequences of my actions. My actions are the ground on which I stand.
There's a great purity in moments of loving kindness,
because in a moment of metta,
in a moment of that generosity of heart,
the simple good wish, good will,
there's nothing harmful mixed in--
nothing harmful to ourselves,
nothing harmful to others.
And therein lies it's purity.
In that sense
a moment of metta
is like a moment of pure gold.
It's not an alloy.
That's the purity of that state. — Joseph Goldstein, Dharma Teacher
